This UNHCR course is aimed at training primary and secondary school teachers the basics of the topic of refugees, asylum and migration.

Words matter. The course focuses first on building knowledge about basic terminology. You will learn what terms like 'refugee', asylum-seeker', 'migrant' and 'internally displaced person' mean.

These labels each designate different categories of people that were forced to leave their homes. But the reasons they leave, the places they go to and their legal situation and safety risk are often completely different.

It is important to know these categories when teaching about the topic of refugees, asylum and migration and to assess the needs of displaced students that you may have in your classroom.

Facts and figures. The course also teaches some basics on the global situation of refugees, where they come from and where they go, and what their rights are.

Age-appropriate teaching. The course offers age-appropriate approaches to broaching the subject of refugees, asylum and migration in your classroom.

Building a resource catalogue. In addition to this, you will learn some basics about teaching in diversity, media literacy with regard to refugees and how to select teaching resources about the topic.
